Introducing Rise. Stay with the story.
Why we built a place for your books, where reading, listening, and curiosity belong together.

You’re halfway through a chapter when it’s time to leave. You want to keep going, but now you need your eyes for something else. Later, a sentence makes you pause. You have a question, and answering it means putting the book down, opening another app, and hoping you remember what you were curious about.
These are ordinary moments in reading. They’re also the moments we wanted Rise to handle better.
We created Rise around a simple idea: a book should fit the way you want to spend time with it. Read for a while. Listen when that suits you. Stop to ask about a passage. Then keep going, with the book still right there.
Start with the book.
Rise is a native reader for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Bring your own DRM-free EPUBs and PDFs, choose a comfortable font and text size, and settle into a chapter. Your library and reading position sync through iCloud. Download a book before you head out, and it’s there when the connection isn’t.
That foundation matters. A reading app is a place you might spend hours. The page needs to feel comfortable, the controls need to make sense, and getting back to your book should be easy. Everything else in Rise starts there.
Give the page a voice.
Reading and listening offer different ways into the same words. A sentence you skimmed can land differently when you hear it. A long passage can become easier to follow. Sometimes, you simply want to rest your eyes and let the story continue.
Rise can narrate your EPUBs using an English voice you download to your device. The sentence being read is highlighted on the page, so you can follow along. Once the book and voice are downloaded, narration works offline.
The voice is generated, so it won’t give you the performance of a professionally recorded audiobook. What it gives you is another way to enjoy a book you already have, in the same place you read it.
Let curiosity have a turn.
Good books make you stop. A character says something unexpected. An argument takes a turn you didn’t follow. You understand the words, but want a little help with what they mean together.
On supported Apple Intelligence devices, you can interrupt narration with a spoken question about the passage. Rise draws on the current and preceding excerpts to offer a short answer. Then you can return to the story.
It has a deliberately narrow view: the nearby text. It can help you think through a passage, but it doesn’t search the whole book or look things up on the web. We want that exchange to make it easier to stay with what you’re reading.
Keep it personal.
Your library can say a lot about you. So can the questions you ask. We wanted Rise to work without sending those words to a service every time you press play or need an explanation. Narration and book questions run on your device. iCloud keeps your library together across your Apple devices, without a separate Rise account.
There’s room for your own writing, too. Export a draft as an EPUB and read it away from the editor. Hearing it aloud can reveal a repeated phrase, a sentence that runs too long, or a paragraph that works better than you thought. A little distance can change what you notice.
That’s why we built Rise: to make it easier to stay with a book, however you’re reading it today.
Read. Listen. Explore.
